Electronic Arts has acquired the social gaming specialist PopCap in a blockbuster deal worth $750 million.
EA has been only a minor player in the casual gaming market until now, with titles such as Lords of Ultima representing its latest efforts to break into the scene. The addition of
PopCap, however, will instantly make the company an industry leader.
“EA and PopCap are a compelling combination,” EA CEO John Riccitiello said of the move. “PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels.”
