Fighting Games Alive And Well, Says Street Fighter Dev

The fighting game genre is alive and well, Street Fighter veteran Yoshinori Ono has said. However, he does not believe it has the ability to rival other, bigger genres, such as sports games and first-person shooters.

"For first person shooters, you have Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal of Honor, and other games," he recently said to Siliconera. "It would be awesome to get fighting games that big.

I don't think it will ever get quite that far, but I think it is possible for fighting games to thrive, you can see how long the FPS genre sustained itself without collapsing, and I think we can do the same this time. The key is not just attracting new fans, but keeping current fans satisfied, keeping them plugged in, and interacting with the community."

Street Fighter IV has just gone through several iterations, with the most recent release apparently being the last. The franchise, however, is still going strong, with the crossover title Street Fighter X Tekken currently in development.
