Final Fantasy XIV Free – For Now
There’s been no bigger train smash in recent MMO history than Final Fantasy XIV. It was released last year to universal scorn and derision, and has not improved much since then. Forums are still aflame with theories about how such an experienced developer could get everything – and we mean everything – so wrong.
At least Square Enix has owned up to the fact that the game sucks, and has made it free to play. And it seems as if it will remain free for the time being.
New producer Naoki Yoshida has assured gamers that he will not ask them for any money until a proper plan for improvement is in place.
"It was pretty much personally because I've been a player for so long,” he told Gamasutra recently. “I wanted to make sure that I would only ask the player to pay for something [once a plan was in place]."
"The reason we're doing this is we're showing the players, yes, it's still costing us a lot of money, and we're not getting that money back yet, but we're serious about making these changes. This is one of the ways that we can show players that we are serious and we are taking it seriously."
The release of the PS3 version of Final Fantasy has been put on indefinite hold, and this latest news makes it seem as if players won’t see it until at least 2012.
