According to data tracking site vgchartz.com, Blizzard’s eagerly-awaited new strategy game sold 1.8 million copies on its first day. This makes it one of the fastest-selling PC games of all time, though it is still well short of the record currently held by Wrath of the Lich King (which sold 2.8 million copies on its first day). The data excludes South Korea, where StarCraft is a national obsession and is popularly followed as a sport in its competitive form. Due to the way the game is sold in Korea, it is nearly impossible to gather proper data.
Wings of Liberty is the first in a three-part series that will make up the whole of the StarCraft 2 release. Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void will follow in the next few years, and are expected to generate similarly impressive numbers for Blizzard.
